NESCA's Website: Down but Not Out. We Were Hacked. Now, We're Back!
March 19, 2014
Yesterday afternoon, NESCA's primary website was hacked, by persons and for purposes unknown, as it collects no credit card or any other data conceivably of interest. Discovered within minutes by the site's hosting service, which conducts almost continuous security scans, this triggered both an automatic shut-down and a call to action on our part.
We responded immediately by identifying and removing the offending code, and strengthening the site's security. These steps have now been verified by the hosting service, and they have restored it to full functionality. We're sorry for any inconvenience caused by this brief interruption.
Be assured that visitors to our site were never at any risk!
The malicious code we analyzed was operational only very briefly, and seems to have been introduced randomly to test the security of our site and, more particularly, the defenses of the hosting service, which might have been the real target.
So essentially, except as an annoyance, the hack FAILED!
