This exciting collaboration between the Spotlight Program and Dr. Ruth Grossman at Emerson college will engage participants in the creation of a series of videos containing first-person accounts of youth ages 14-22 with social-emotional challenges talking about how they experience the world around them.

Her research is focused on various aspects of face-to-face communication in children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). She is specifically interested in how children with ASD integrate and produce verbal and nonverbal information, such as facial expressions and prosody.
These personal narratives will focus particularly on the difficulties children with High Functioning Autism, Asperger’s Syndrome and related disorders have managing social and academic aspects of school.
The videos will also focus on self-advocacy and expressing how each individual sees the world, what they want their peers to know about them, and how they would like to be treated by others.
The videos are expected to be used as a tool to raise awareness among teachers and peers and will be available for teacher professional development, classroom projects about diversity, and educational units on self-advocacy.
The ultimate goal of the project is to engage Emerson students in learning about these issues and helping educators, TD peers, and children with social-emotional challenges communicate with each other more effectively.
