Experts agree that children and adolescents are growing up in an increasingly complex and stressful world full of social and academic challenges. Some of our kids are struggling to manage them due to biological, psychological and/or social issues.
The symptoms of these underlying issues may include school avoidance, isolation, poor grades, self-harm, problems with relationships, impulsivity, poor decision-making, defiance, eating disorders and substance abuse.
NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, is offering an educational program - “NAMI Basics”, specially designed for parents and other caregivers of adolescents and children living with emotional or behavioral challenges . The course is taught by trained volunteer teachers who themselves are parents and/or caregivers of children living with emotional difficulties.
This structure creates an intimacy that few programs possess and consequently, one whose capacities are unparalleled. It is an evidenced-based program that's recognized across the country.
The “Basics” program runs for seven weekly consecutive classes each lasting 2 ½ hours. There is no cost to participants for the course, and all materials are provided by NAMI. The program's goal is to provide the fundamentals of caring for you, your family and your child with emotional difficulties.
Up-to-date information on common disorders in children, current research related to the biology of these disorders and the evidenced-based, most effective treatment strategies, available along with various therapies and medications sometimes utilized as part of them, will be covered.
Workshops in problem solving, listening and communication skills are highlighted. You will learn about methods of working with both the school and the health care systems as well as personal record keeping methods that have proven to be effective for parent/caregivers in their interactions with these systems.
Also, covered will be the need for personal advocacy on behalf of your child in locating and obtaining appropriate supports and services within the community.
Join us and acquire the tools needed to greatly assist you in making the best decisions possible for the care of your child!
